Disk Space Monitoring

The program allows you to monitor free space on disks over a network with the help of the disk space monitoring check.

The check allows monitoring the size of free space in a specified folder or on a logical drive on a remote or local computer using several methods: 1) access to a share, 2) SNMP, 3) WMI, 4) Agent installed on a remote PC (in the Pro version).

In the first case, it is necessary to have an access to the monitored disk through a local path or a network share's path for the check operation, like "c:\" or "\\pcname\c$". The SNMP method allows you to monitor free disk space on computers with any OS that supports this protocol (Windows, Linux, MacOS, etc.). The WMI method only works with Windows computers and can be an alternative to the shared folder method (it does not require any additional software installed on a remote PC).

How to set up the free disk space check for remote computers / hosts?

You need to add all hosts to the monitoring list and add the "Disk Space" check to each host. There are several options for how this check works. Everyone uses their own way of getting information about disk space.

1. SNMP

You need to enable SNMP service on each computer (through adding Windows components: "Applications and Features" - "Additional Features" - "Add Features" - "SNMP Protocol").

After that, open "Services" and find the "SNMP Service" in the list.

Open the properties and on the "Security" tab, set "Community" (password for access). Enable "Accept SNMP packets from any host".

Save and restart the SNMP service. Now you can receive data from this host over the network via SNMP. You can test it this way... Set the Community string (or SNMPv3 credentials) in the check parameters and click the button next to the "Drive or path" field.

If all is well, a list with the logical drives of the remote computer should be displayed. Select the required drive for monitoring.

2. WMI

You can receive data via WMI from any Windows computer to which your user has the administrator access. If necessary, you can enable the authorization with username and password. Test the possibility of obtaining the drive list via WMI, as in step 1. If the attempt is successful, you can continue configuring the check further.

3. Agent

In the Pro version of the program, the free disk space information is available through the Agent service installed on the remote host. Install the agent service on each computer you want to monitor. Enable the Use agent option and select a drive letter from the list.

You can test that the check normally receives data by clicking the Get button. The Free space field should display the value of free space on the selected disk in the specified units. Then you can fill in the fields like this: The check is passed if the free space is more than 1 GB. After that, go to the next step by clicking Next>> and set the notification methods that should be executed when the free disk space is less than 1 GB.
